Third Door Media team members share a passion for internet marketing. Here are the people who make it all happen!
Chris has more than 20 years interactive media and marketing experience in management, product development, marketing and editorial positions. From 1997 to 2006, Chris was Vice President & General Manager of JupiterWeb, the online publishing division of what is now Jupitermedia Corporation (NASDAQ: JUPM). In that role, he was responsible for sales, marketing, editorial and production of JupiterWeb’s more than 100 web sites. He participated in more than 50 site acquisitions and was a key member of the management team that took Jupitermedia-predecessor, internet.com Corporation, public in 1999. He also directed the launch of Jupitermedia’s Events division in 1999, the year Jupitermedia teamed with Danny Sullivan to produce the first Search Engine Strategies conference. Prior to Jupitermedia, Chris served in management, marketing and product development capacities at business research and publishing firm Simba Information. He began his career in business journalism at Knowledge Industry Publications and Digital Information Group, and was in new business development department at Covidea, a pioneering home banking joint venture of AT&T, Time Inc. and Chemical Bank. Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from an obscure New England college and lives in Redding, CT, with his wife, Paula, and children, Elizabeth and Alex.
Widely considered a leading search engine expert, Danny Sullivan has been helping webmasters, marketers and everyday web users understand how search engines work for over a decade. Danny’s expertise about search engines is often sought by the media, and he has been quoted in places like The Wall St. Journal, USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, Forbes, The New Yorker and Newsweek and ABC’s Nightline. Danny began covering search engines in late 1995, when he undertook a study of how they indexed web pages. The results were published online as “A Webmaster’s Guide To Search Engines,” a pioneering effort to answer the many questions site designers and Internet publicists had about search engines. Danny works as the founding editor of Search Engine Land and Marketing Land, which cover all aspects of digital marketing, search marketing and search engine news. Danny also serves as Third Door Media’s chief content officer, which owns Search Engine Land and the SMX: Search Marketing Expo conference series.
Sean’s events management career spans 17 years. He has managed sales organizations for some of the IT industry’s most dynamic events such as Comdex and Internet World. Along with these large events, Sean was responsible for running many vertical/boutique events.
Chris Sherman is Executive Editor of SearchEngineLand.com and President of Searchwise LLC, a Boulder Colorado based Web consulting firm. With over 25 years experience in interactive technologies, he is frequently quoted in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Business Week, USA Today and other publications, and has appeared on CNN, NPR, CBS and other television and radio networks. Chris is a Web Search University faculty member, and is an honorary inductee of the Internet Librarian Hall of Fame. He is the author of “Google Power: Unleash the Full Power of Google” from McGraw-Hill. His previous books include “The Invisible Web: Uncovering Information Sources Search Engines Can’t See” (with Gary Price) from CyberAge Books; The McGraw-Hill CD ROM Handbook, and The Elements of Basic, The Elements of Cobol and The Elements of Pascal from John Wiley & Sons. Chris has written about search and search engines since 1994. His clients have included International Data Corporation, Accenture, Motorola, Levi-Strauss, Nokia, Ortho Biotech, Porsche, United Technologies, and the Scripps Clinic. From 2001 through 2006, Chris was Executive Editor of SearchEngineWatch.com and Conference Chair of the international Search Engine Strategies events in Canada, China, France, Italy, Sweden and the U.K. From 1998 to 2001, he was the Web Search Guide for About.com. Chris holds a master’s degree in Interactive Educational Technology from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts and Communications from the University of California, San Diego. Chris has been unsuccessful in his attempts to persuade Stanford to strip his degree so he can join the founders of Yahoo and Google in boasting about *not* graduating from the university.
Zane has been developing, designing, and optimizing websites since 1997. Prior to joining the Third Door Media team, he worked at We Build Pages, Dreamhost, and freelanced. He enjoys working with WordPress, HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL. Zane holds a Computer Science degree from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York. In his spare time, Zane enjoys surfing, spending time outdoors, brewing beer, playing with gadgets, and modifying his Raspberry Pi board.
Karen has more than 15 years event management experience with the past 8 years focused on the search marketing world. Karen helped to establish the launch of Jupitermedia’s Events division in 1999, including the first Search Engine Strategies Conference. Karen has produced international and domestic events, consumer and trade events for Reed Exhibition Companies, Conference Management Corporation, Association Exhibition and Services, the Cancer Society and Easter Seals. Karen holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of Connecticut and lives in Trumbull, CT with her husband , Cory and daughter, Haley.
Amy reports on the latest news and updates for Marketing Land and Search Engine Land. Prior to joining Third Door Media, she was an award-winning syndicated columnist for a number of daily newspapers from New York to Texas. With more than ten years of marketing management experience, she has contributed to a variety of traditional and online publications.
Katie first started her career at Price Waterhouse. Katie’s financial skills were further developed in a variety of positions while working for Aetna, GGB (a Wall Street brokerage house), and Cadbury Schweppes. She ran a family owned business commuting bi-weekly from England for 4 years before joining the Third Door Media team in 2007. Katie graduated from Boston College with degrees in Accounting and Marketing and lives in Fairfield, CT with her husband John and has 4 children.
Akvile immersed herself into the world of online marketing nearly a decade ago after discovering her passion for the field. Since joining the Third Door Media team, she has been expanding Search Marketing Expo’s reach and visibility through paid search and social media marketing campaigns, as well as assisting clients with advertising operations on Search Engine Land and Marketing Land. Prior to Third Door Media, she began her marketing career at Evo, a Seattle based snowboard and ski company where she assisted with ecommerce strategy, followed by successfully building the paid search programs at Trupanion Pet Insurance from the ground up. When Akvile is not surfing the web, informing marketers about SMX conferences, she enjoys painting, traveling, and working on her bucket list. She holds a Bachelors degree of Science from Bastyr University and currently resides in Southern California.
For nearly 20 years, Kendra has managed and marketed conferences, Internet advertising products and subscription-based information services for professionals in search marketing, IT, publishing and graphic design. Most recently, Kendra oversaw the development, management and marketing of a Web-based video tutorial subscription service for graphic designers. In addition to creating and managing Jupitermedia’s Webcast business, she was responsible for the P&L, operations, product development and marketing of the company’s conference business, serving IT segments including search marketing, Web analytics, networking and IT management. Prior to Jupitermedia, Kendra worked at R.H. Donnelley where she created an innovative service designed to bring Web solutions to small local businesses. In this role, she worked directly with technology vendors such as interactive advertising agencies, search companies and online directory publishers. She launched her career marketing newsletters, conferences and research reports at Simba Information, a b-to-b research and publishing firm, and eventually led operations for the company. Kendra has a BS in marketing from Fairfield University, and a MBA in marketing and management from New York University. She lives in Brookfield, CT with her husband, two children, and two assistants/pugs who sleep in her office all day.
Lauren supports the Search Engine Land community, overseeing Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn and Twitter, as well as community features on the site itself. Her first Wiley book, “The Complete Social Media Community Manager’s Guide: Essential Tools and Tactics for Business Success,” was released in January, 2013 and can be found on Amazon.com.
Ginny Marvin writes about paid online marketing topics including paid search, paid social, display and retargeting for Search Engine Land and Marketing Land. With more than 15 years of marketing experience, Ginny has held both in-house and agency management positions. She provides search marketing and demand generation advice for ecommerce companies and can be found on Twitter as @ginnymarvin.
Chris has been in the internet marketing business for 5 plus years, and in the networking/consulting business for 15 years before joining TDM. Her focus for Third Door Media is on lead generation products. She is responsible for producing and managing content creation programs for our clients, including webcasts, e-Solution spotlights (ESS), and Solution Centers. Most recently Chris was a founding partner with Tucker Network Technologies. After 15 years of success the company was sold to March 1st.. Tucker Network Technologies focused on building strategic network infrastructures. Chris started her career with Digital Equipment Corporation as a senior Sales Account Manager – focusing on Network sales. Chris Graduated from Ripon College in Wisconsin and lives in Connecticut with her husband and three big kids!
Matt McGee is Editor-In-Chief of Marketing Land and Search Engine Land. His news career includes time spent in TV, radio, and print journalism. His web career continues to include a small number of SEO and social media consulting clients, as well as regular speaking engagements at marketing events around the US. Elisabeth is responsible for increasing readership through owned, earned and paid media channels. In addition, she assists in programming sessions at Third Door Media’s Search Marketing Expo conference series, manages media interviews and books speaking engagements for editorial staff.
Pamela oversees feature articles and material from guest contributors for Search Engine Land and Marketing Land. Beyond Search Engine Land, Pamela blogs about media and marketing at The River and about cooking, gardening and parenthood at Free Range.
Sarah has more than 15 years of experience crafting effective internet marketing solutions for technology marketers and their agencies. Most recently Sarah was a senior sales executive at QuinStreet (NASDAQ:QNST), a provider of performance marketing solutions for marketers. Prior to QuinStreet and dating back to 1998, Sarah held senior sales positions in the US and Europe at Web Media Brands and its predecessor companies including Jupiter Media and internet.com Corporation. She started her career in 1995 at IDG working on InfoWorld. Sarah graduated from Holy Cross and lives in New York with her husband and two young boys.
Michelle has been designing, developing, deploying and marketing web sites for a variety of business sectors since 1995. From 1999 to 2006 she grew her own web development consultancy to create online presences, develop custom applications and implement various web marketing initiatives for such companies as American Airlines, Honda Civic Tour, DMX Music, and more. Prior to striking out on her own, she worked with Danny Sullivan at one of Southern California’s first online agencies and web server software development startups. Before crossing over to technology and search in 1995, Michelle spent 4 years on the management team in marketing and promotion at the Walt Disney Company’s record label (Hollywood Records). Michelle has two bachelor degrees from the Univeristy of California, Irvine, and lives in Southern California with her husband and two children. In her spare time, she imagines what it would be like to actually have spare time.
Claire has held senior marketing and operations positions at a variety of publishing companies – both print and digital, Enterprise and SMB – for more than 25 years. Starting out in editorial at Conde Nast, she subsequently got an MBA in marketing at NYU and returned to the publishing world where she worked at Simon & Schuster, Cambridge University Press, and Macmillan, Inc. Prior to Third Door, Claire was responsible for marketing and production of webcasts at Jupitermedia Corp. and before that she managed one of three information practices covering publishing markets for Primedia’s Simba Information division. She has consulted companies such as WebMD, Scholastic, and Dun & Bradstreet. In her spare time Claire enjoys rowing with a crew team in Norwalk, CT
Jessica is a part of the contributed content team, working directly with our expert columnists to ensure the best content is delivered to Search Engine Land and Marketing Land readers on a daily basis. She also reviews the guest contributor applications for promising candidates.
Mary has 18 years of experience selling and producing events primarily in the IT industry. She has worked on a variety of small, large, and boutique events both domestically and internationally. Many of the shows she worked on from their infancy and gets a kick out of watching them grow along with the industry that they serve. Some of the more notable shows that Mary helped launch are COMDEX (Internationally) and Internet World. Prior to joining Third Door Media, Mary was employed at Jupitermedia Corporation where she helped create and sell their webcast program for which Chris Sherman was the primary content expert. Mary has a strong track record of working with her clients, listening to the objectives they are trying to reach at an event, and developing a sponsorship program to help meet those needs. Mary received her Bachelor’s degree from Boston College and lives in Walpole, MA with her husband and 2 children.
Monica Wright serves as Vice President of Audience Engagement for Third Door Media, producers of digital marketing leaders Search Engine Land, Marketing Land, and the SMX and MarTech Conference series. With over 15 years of experience in online publishing, content marketing and audience development for media companies, she is focused on content consumption and measuring user engagement across multiple platforms and channels including desktop, mobile, social and email. Monica graduated from Boston College and lives in Maine with her husband and two sons. She can be found on Twitter as @monicawright.
Marc has 15 years of experience selling and producing trade shows in the IT industry. For the past 6 years, Marc has sold SMX Events, DMD lead-gen programs and TDM Network Advertising. Prior to joining Third Door Media, Marc worked for Internet World Trade Shows for many years, but has also worked for Oracle, selling Oracle OpenWorld and in the SAS Event Center. Marc has a strong track record of working with his clients and retaining clients for SMX Events and the other TDM Properties.
David is currently a student at College of the Canyons in Valencia, CA. where he is pursuing a degree in Computer Science. He has working knowledge of HTML, XHTML, CSS, WordPress, and Photoshop. His fascination with computers and technology started when he was a child and out of this fascination, he built his very first computer at age 13. When he’s not at school, working, or studying you can find him enjoying craft beer, relaxing on a beach, snowboarding, or rock climbing.
Tracey comes to Third Door Media from a long career in the tradeshow and event management industry. After earning a BS degree in Merchandising and Retailing, Tracey took a detour into event management operations by way of Reed Exhibitions where she discovered “show business” working on a diverse portfolio of events in industries such as IT, book publishing, manufacturing, specialty food and fashion eyewear. She worked in a multitude of roles including registration, conference and operations management. After a 16 year tenure at Reed, she followed with a 6+ year role as Senior Director of Operations at Penton Media in Stamford, CT. Tracey resides in Fairfield, CT with her husband Steve and two sons, Josh & Luke. She is a music & pop culture enthusiast, food and wine lover and spends her office hours sharing space with 2 cats, Jack & Kate and dog, Sawyer.
Ed has been working in the online marketing world for over 15 years. His experience includes email campaigns, social media, branding, ecommerce merchandising, blogging, SEO, loyalty programs, PPC and mobile app design. Before he joined Third Door Media, Ed was an online marketing consultant, conducted digital marketing seminars and co-founder of the Infinite Mind Share networking group. Ed also found time to fulfill his dream of being a motorsports photographer, traveling to race tracks around the country in search of rare and classic Ferrari’s in action. Prior to this, Ed worked at American Express in Card Member Acquisition for the Starwood Preferred Guest Card. He also worked in Product Marketing at Office Depot and for several ecommerce start-ups. Ed earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and an MBA in Marketing, both from the University of Connecticut. He is a competitive sailor and lives in Fairfield, Connecticut with his wife and two children.
Edna is an experienced B2B online advertising pro with over ten years of experience focusing on demand generation, performance marketing, and content strategy. Prior to joining Third Door Media, Edna worked in the B2B Verticals at WebMediaBrands and then at Quinstreet — where she led the team responsible for the planning and execution of B2B lead, click, and display campaigns for hundreds of clients, including Fortune 100 technology companies and top media and advertising agencies. Edna earned her BA in psychology from Stanford and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. An avid hiker, she enjoys and supports the region’s epic county, state and national parks. In addition to hiking, she sees (and hears) as much live music as possible, and competes in a local Trivia League.
Kyle supports the Search Marketing Expo and MarTech Conference community through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+. With an extensive technical background in design, programming and social media strategy, Kyle is able to provide a variety of well rounded experience to the Third Door Media team. After graduating Johnson & Wales University with a BS in Computer Graphics & New Media, he then moved to Maine where he currently resides with his wife and son (on the way!). You can usually find Kyle on the softball field, supervising the grill during BBQ season or trying to catch fish on Webb Lake.
John has been designing and developing websites since he was 14 years old, and has previously worked with clients including YP, Move.com, Celebrity Cruises & DTS. When he’s not buried inside code, he’s probably figuring out new techniques and ways to develop bigger and better things. Outside of work, he enjoys both playing and building drums, and spending time exploring the world with his wife and three kids.
Martin Beck is Third Door Media’s Social Media Reporter, covering the latest news for Marketing Land and Search Engine Land. He spent 24 years with the Los Angeles Times, serving as social media and reader engagement editor from 2010-2014. A graduate of UC Irvine and the University of Missouri journalism school, Beck started started his career at the Times as a sportswriter and copy editor.
Allison is a seasoned marketing communications and digital marketing professional with nearly of decade of experience. She has successfully managed B2B and B2C campaigns across multiple channels within the insurance industry and most recently the private investigation industry. Allison received her MA in International Business and Management from the University of Westminster and BBA in International Marketing from Baruch College. In her personal time, Allison enjoys scuba diving, playing soccer and spending time with her highly energetic daughter.
Katie has been interning with Third Door Media since April of 2013, as a freshman in college. Katie is a senior at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts majoring in Information Design & Corporate Communications (IDCC) with a minor in entrepreneurial studies. Katie works with our editorial team to help promote our content via our various social media channels, track and measure our audiences and traffic, and assist with speaker presentations for our SMX shows. In her free time, Katie is the President of Bentley’s chapter of HerCampus.com, and is an active karate practitioner, instructor, and competitor on local, national, and international circuits.
Amy comes to TDM after a long career in marketing, sales management, new business development and event planning at JPMorgan Chase and its predecessor banks. Amy also has seven years experience in the travel industry as a professional travel planner where she arranged customized international golf- and other luxury- trips all over the world. Amy is passionate about food and wine, cooking and gardening. She loves spending time with family and friends, entertaining, skiing and traveling. Amy lives in Norwalk with her husband Gordon and a small rowdy cat.
Laura is the Senior Producer for Custom and Special Projects at Third Door Media. She is involved in the development, creation and strategic planning of high-visibility, complex, custom marketing programs across content and audience platforms for major clients, and coordinates creative, marketing, content and tech teams to optimize and deliver audience engagement as well as track, assess and present campaign effectiveness. She herds cats…lots of cats, and clients.
Elizabeth started her career in sales in 2007. She got her start in the search space selling for Search Engine Watch, ClickZ and the Search Engine Strategies conference from 2009-2012. She has since worked for various b2b publishing companies prior to joining Third Door Media. Elizabeth holds a bachelor’s degree from Lasell College. She is passionate about fitness and nutrition, and can usually be found at the gym when she isn’t working. Elizabeth lives in New York City.
Marc has led high-growth change at a wide range of organizations, from large enterprises to start-ups. His unique ability to combine process-centered thinking with creative problem solving has allowed him to be successful in the face of fast-paced change and chaos. He believes that growth happens when technology and creativity converge and has put these methods to good use across multiple sectors and verticals helping organizations as far ranging as PwC, Microsoft, Autism Speaks and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society utilize technology and digital marketing to grow revenues. His agile skillset and ability to lead diverse teams has allowed him to achieve success in the areas of product development and marketing, digital media, fundraising, and social marketing. Most recently he helped develop and execute technology and social media strategies for some of the country’s leading companies in energy, real estate and technology. He has also created and launched online communities for Microsoft, Autism Speaks and The March of Dimes.
Tim Peterson has been covering the digital marketing industry since 2011. He has reported for Advertising Age, Adweek and Direct Marketing News. A born-and-raised Angeleno who graduated from New York University, he currently lives in Los Angeles. He has broken stories on Snapchat’s ad plans, Hulu founding CEO Jason Kilar’s attempt to take on YouTube and the assemblage of Amazon’s ad-tech stack; analyzed YouTube’s programming strategy, Facebook’s ad-tech ambitions and ad blocking’s rise; and documented digital video’s biggest annual event VidCon, BuzzFeed’s branded video production process and Snapchat Discover’s ad load six months after launch. He has also developed tools to monitor brands’ early adoption of live-streaming apps, compare Yahoo’s and Google’s search designs and examine the NFL’s YouTube and Facebook video strategies.
